A network failure is rarely just an IT problem. When the network goes down, employees may stop working, customers may struggle to reach the business, payments can be interrupted and critical systems can become unavailable. For businesses in Kenya, Uganda and across East Africa, this risk is influenced by more than equipment failure. Power interruptions and fluctuations, connectivity disruptions and cyberattacks can all bring operations to a halt. The goal is not to build a network that never fails. It is to build one where a single failure does not bring the business to a stop.
1. Build in Redundancy
Redundancy means having an alternative when something important fails. But it goes beyond simply keeping spare equipment.
Hardware Redundancy - Critical network equipment should not always depend on a single device. If an important component fails, having an alternative can help keep essential services running or speed up recovery.
Network Path Redundancy - A business that depends entirely on one internet connection or network path has a single point of failure. Where operations depend heavily on connectivity, having an alternative path can help keep the business connected when the primary one fails. This is particularly relevant where businesses depend on internet connectivity for cloud applications, communications, payments and other daily operations.
Power Redundancy - Network equipment is only useful when it has reliable power. Businesses should consider how critical equipment will remain protected and powered during outages, voltage fluctuations and other electrical problems.
This is a real concern in both Kenya and Uganda. Kenya's electricity regulator tracks the frequency, duration and restoration of power interruptions, while its Grid Code recognises voltage fluctuations and over-voltages as power-quality issues. Uganda's Electricity Regulatory Authority also identifies planned and unplanned outages, overloaded transformers, vandalism and other grid problems among causes of power interruptions.
Power resilience is therefore part of network resilience.
